Cottage Life

August Journaling

1.     Our youngest is going to PEI for a week.

2.     To Hamilton; lasagna and Caesar salad for dinner. Staying overnight.

3.     Took the kids to a nearby zoo; it was nice but it was hard for me to push the toddler in the stroller over rough surfaces. Mashed potatoes and meatballs for dinner. The taste of my childhood.

4.     Getting some things done till the kids come over. Our daughter and her kids came to stay overnight so her husband could get some work done. Souvlaki and salad for dinner. She had a friend over for a sauna.

5.     Burgers for dinner. No fire on the new bbq.

6.     Church, then taking a new family out to a restaurant to get to know them. Had our travel buddies and the three Mexican men who helped rebuild our deck over for dinner and cards.

7.     Civic holiday. Went to their house and had lunch there and a card game marathon. Exhausting, since it was during my usual nap time.

8.     Writing.

9.     To Hamilton for two days. I took the kids to African Lion Safari. It was crowded; I didn’t know it was so popular. We couldn’t do the water park because of the cast, but we did a tour by bus and then watched a birds of prey show. Exhausting form me, but they loved it.

10. We baked and did crafts today. The toddler got her cast off today. Yay!

11. Writing. Harvesting my herbs from my herb garden. Going to see Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

12. A day at home, cleaning out drawers in my kitchen island. They never take as long as you’d expect. Playing cards on the deck with my husband.

13. Church. I’m on a keto diet and have lost 4.5 pounds since the cruise.

14. Writing; working on my lessons for the women’s Bible study in September. I’ve had two months off, but still don’t feel ready to get back into it.

15. More of what I did yesterday.

16. A trip to the Dollar Store to buy craft supplies for the grandkids when we go up north. Prayer meeting.

17. More decluttering and organizing of drawers in my kitchen. Writing.

18. Finally catching up on my podcast, beginning the book of Joshua. Don’t ask how long it took to do Genesis to Deuteronomy and Job: 3-1/2 years. This looks like it’s going to be my magnum opus.

19. Random stuff around the house.

20. Church, then drove up to my brother-in-law’s for his birthday. Their other brother was up from Florida. We went for a boat ride in his new boat.

21. Prepared my eighth parcel to the orphans in Uganda. 75 hats, 90 sunglasses and maple cookies, a whiteboard and pads.

22. I made keto/low carb bagels with a recipe from lowcarblove.com and it was very good. Going to the doctor with my mom.

23. Dentist appointment.

24. Packing for up north.

25. Pain clinic and final packing.

26. Long drive up north to the cottage on Wakomata Lake. First camp fire.

27. Grocery shopping in Thessalon for the week. The kids are catching fish.

28. Swimming and kayaking. Our friend flew into the lake with his float plane. All the neighbours came running to see it. We made them lasagna, Caesar salad, and blueberry crumble with ice cream for dessert.

29. Rainy day; doing crafts with the kids.

30. Friends of ours from a nearby camp came for supper; chicken, ribs, corn on the cob, and brownies for dessert.

31. Drove into the Soo. Stopped in at Pino’s grocery store for their famous sausages (bought five packages plus breakfast sausages), then went to my dad’s gravesite with my mom and the rest of us. Ironically, it was the day he died 56 years ago. Then we went to visit my cousin in hospital; she is being discharged today after six weeks. We left my mom with them to visit. Then we drove out to my other cousin’s house on a lake and went for sauna and swim and stayed for dinner. Two hour drive back out to the cottage.

37th Anniversary

July Journaling

1.     Day ten: second sea day. The second part of the on-board behind the scenes excursion of the theatre, kitchen, bakery, laundry, and supply storage. Very interesting. It’s also Canada Day. We dressed in red and brought the flags to dinner again.

2.     Day eleven: Kiel, Germany again, so we stayed on board. I had a Bali foot massage and pedicure.

3.     Day twelve: Copenhagen, Denmark. We did a hop on hop off Royal City bus tour. It was nice to see the little mermaid but it was otherwise unremarkable and the stops weren’t clearly marked to get back on, so we took a cab back to the ship so we wouldn’t miss it and also it was raining. The weather changed every five minutes there. That evening we rewatched the theatre show Aziza with this amazing contortionist. We heard our three-year-old granddaughter broke her leg on the trampoline. This kind of fracture is common in preschoolers, apparently.

4.     Day thirteen: fourth and final sea day. Packed, dinner at Butcher’s Cut. They didn’t serve butter with the lobster so it wasn’t very good. I guess I compare it to the Keg which is much better. And for it being the only specialty restaurant on board this ship, they should have chosen a better location without a view of the lifeboats.

5.     Day fourteen: Tallinn, Estonia. I liked this place; it has a language closest to Finnish so I could make out most signs. Everything is cheaper there so many Finns go over by ferry to buy alcohol and other things. We also went to a KGB prison which didn’t close down until 1991. It was near the Russian embassy which had a bunch of signs protesting the war in Ukraine.

6.     Day fifteen: Returned to Helsinki. We had the morning here, so my sister invited us for a beautiful Finnish brunch. Then we had a long return flight home. We flew on Finnair and American Airlines. I watched two movies because I couldn’t sleep well. We had a layover in Chicago. We were awake 24 hours. Glad to get home.

7.     So. Much. Laundry. My mom was dropped off by my cousin. She was in London with my aunt the whole time.

8.     I pulled a muscle in my leg so I’m limping around.

9.     Back at church. Picked up the grandkids for VBS this coming week. The little one has a cast but can weight bear a little bit.

10. First day of VBS; the theme is Keepers of the Kingdom about the armor of God and the two kingdoms. I’m in charge of snacks this week. We took the kids swimming today and we covered the little one’s cast and dipped her ‘like a teabag’.

11. The busiest day for snacks this week because it is baking and we only have two hours to make enough for 80 people. Then I go out to the grocery store to get the food for the following day.

12. Went for another swim today after VBS and I swam too.

13. The kids had VBS then the older ones were taken to a trout pond to try to catch fish, but only one of the adults caught four, and none for anyone else. It was her first time. We ate them and they were good.

14. Final day of VBS and then we had a hot dog lunch for the kids and their parents. Our daughter and her husband came to pick up the kids on their way home from a few nights away together.

15. Finally a calm and quiet day for the first time after our trip.

16. Church. I was on coffee time, and there was a lot of leftover stuff. I also baked an apple cake.

17. Our daughter is visiting her boyfriend in Colorado for the weekend and meeting his dog, Aldo.

18. Guest speaker at church, then we had him over for lunch. It was Roger Fellows, whom we’ve known for thirty years.

19. My mom had an appointment with a kidney specialist a year and a half after her acute renal failure. That’s a bit ridiculous. Went to Hamilton to help out and will stay overnight. My mom is coming too, but it’s harder for her with CPAP and things like that. The three-year-old is starting to weight-bear.

20. Took the grandkids to Giant Tiger to buy hats and sunglasses for the kids in Uganda. Of course they got some too.

21. Women’s ministry meeting. Finally back to my podcasts after a month. Some are missing. I’ll have to re-record them.

22. Church then out to Pickle Barrel with our travel companions for lunch.

23. Taking my mom to the hospital for a scheduled iron infusion. It should top her up for ahile.

24. The cleaning lady is coming today, but we’ll be out in Hamilton for two days.

25. The two older kids are at gymnastics camp all week, so it’s just the three-year-old with the broken leg with us during the day. It’s also our 37th wedding anniversary, but we’ll celebrate on the weekend. I’ll post our wedding photo and a recent one. She is weight bearing quite well and can scooch up and down the stairs on her butt.

26. Trying to figure out how to reduce the price of my book on amazon.ca They are charging over $80 for a paperback copy, whereas it started out at $21 and I’d be happy with $9.99 They are not an easy company to work with.

27. Going out to the Keg for our anniversary dinner. Our daughter is coming home for the weekend for a concert.

28. Had an awning installed on the deck for more shade. It’s almost back to normal after the fire in mid-April.

29. My three-year-old granddaughter was told she needed to have fruit with her waffle at breakfast. She asked, “Is a Timbit fruit?”

30. Church this morning. Concerned about my mom’s health. An x-ray showed calcification of both her carotid arteries and aorta. I contacted the cardiologist to see about increasing her blood thinners. No change.

31. Organized my spices into a drawer instead of a cupboard for accessibility. Much better. Dropping our daughter off at the train. She won’t be back until Thanksgiving.

25 years cancer-free!/ 60 years old/Baltic Cruise

June Journaling

1.     We’ve decided to stop our Bible studies until September. I appreciate the break. I’m busy with plans for our trip in three weeks.

2.     Our deck is getting replaced after the bbq fire mid April. My daughter is in town from Ottawa for a concert and so we went downtown to Planta, a vegan restaurant.

3.     We were at church for a giftedness conference: it was very helpful. It confirmed that I was born to learn, teach, and write. Today my husband is 25 years cancer free. So we bought a cake and our church family celebrated with us. On June 3rd, 1998 Gary had surgery for osteosarcoma, a bone cancer in his leg. The years of survival are counted from that day. We’ve celebrated every five years. There are not many happy stories when you hear a cancer diagnosis, but this is one. Hanna and Leah were only 6 and 8 at the time. But he was able to walk Hanna down the aisle and see his grandchildren. The Apostle Paul almost lost a friend to illness but God spared him, so I feel this verse is appropriate. “For indeed he was sick almost unto death; but God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.” Phil.2:27

4.     Church.

5.     Chiro and errands. Our deck is remade and stained. I need to stop buying clothes!

6.     Writing. I should be finished Deuteronomy before our cruise. Then my podcasts will have Genesis to Deuteronomy and the book of Job. It only took two and a half years. 😊

7.      Prayer meeting. One of the pastors in the Mandarin language church plant is in ICU with flesh eating disease.

8.     Our daughter is coming home again this weekend. I finally found a pharmacy that will prepare my pills for travel in blister packs. My usual pharmacy refused since they didn’t supply all of them, but the other one did. So much easier than trying to bring all my meds in the original bottles.

9.     Today we are meeting our youngest daughter’s boyfriend, Gary, whom she met at base camp in Nepal. He was in the same excursion group so they were together for three weeks. He’s an American from Colorado. I guess they’re seeing if meeting the family is a deal-breaker. He is vegan too, like my daughter so I’m making mushroom stroganoff.

10. Driving out to Hamilton for Gary to meet the rest of the family, including both grandmothers. I am scrambling to get a lot of work done before we go. I am proof-reading a 20 page paper for a seminary student and finishing up my podcast of Deuteronomy before vacation. We leave a week from Sunday.

11. The middle child had a fever and sore throat. Found out all three kids have strep throat.

12. Pain clinic this morning, and a few more errands. This evening we will have a meeting at church in preparation for vacation bible school when we return.

13. Thankfully, I found a pharmacy that would fill my medications in bubble packs for travel, so there is less grief at the border. Leah and Gary left for Ottawa two days ago. I’ll post a picture of them. Our daughter’s boyfriend is very nice and a good fit for our family. He is currently working in water treatment so he has that in common with my husband who is in water distribution. And although he already has a degree in marketing, he is currently enrolled in school to learn web design, so he had that in common with my son-in-law. He also has the same first name as my husband, which is funny. Pia and Gary and Leah and Gary. Not confusing at all. They are serious very quickly, as my husband and I were too.

14. Done my podcast: I have now completed a paper on each chapter of the Bible books Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Job, as well as introductions and summaries of each. It only took two-and-a-half years. Can you see why this is my life’s work?

15. Packing for our cruise. Had to take my mom for a doctor’s appointment to refill her prescriptions since she’ll be in London with my aunt while we’re gone.

16. Taking my mom to Hamilton. My cousin from London will pick her up from there and take her the rest of the way.

17. It’s father’s day and my husband’s 60th birthday! I’m married to an old man. But he never complains about aging because the alternative to growing old is dying young. Our friends had a bbq so we went for a few hours. They had a cake for him. Then we went and booked our seats on the plane because we leave in 24 hours!

18. Church, then nap and heading to the airport to leave for almost three weeks. Going to the land of my birth, Finland, for the first time since I was 13 (46 years), are you doing the math? Then to Stockholm, Sweden; four places in Norway; Kiel, Germany; Copenhagen, Denmark; Tallinn, Estonia; and back to Helsinki, Finland. Also four sea days. So looking forward to relaxing and having fun with our friends, John and Esther who have an adjoining balcony stateroom. We have three days in Helsinki first where we’ll see the sights and my relatives. Soooo excited!

19. The flight was on British Airways and it was very comfortable. The last part of the journey was on Finnair which was exciting. They serve blueberry juice, and it was nice to hear the announcements in Finnish.  Arrived at our hotel, the Aleksanteri Radisson Blu. Went to eat dinner at a great Finnish restaurant called Kappeli. Surprised by the midnight sun.

20. Found a great restaurant for breakfast, quite by accident; Eckbert. Then when we did a hop-on-hop-off bus we found out it was the oldest café in Helsinki, started by an orphan. Then we walked around and went to the Rock Church. At two p.m. my cousin’s daughter picked us up and we went to my cousin’s home for a garden pizza party. Some of my relatives travelled some distance to see me and they kept saying, “I can’t believe you’re here!” The woman who picked us up is married to an Italian man she met while in law school in Australia. He’s a chef. So he brought his pizza oven and made a pizza feast for us. They made us all feel welcome. This was why we came early; to see family. I’ll post a picture. Then we found a French restaurant called Le Cou Cou Vert, where we went for drinks, but ended up eating another meal; it was delicious.

21. Ate breakfast at the hotel, and then my sister and her husband came to meet us and we took a ferry over to Suomenlinna, the military base where our father served his mandatory military service. So excited to be able to go into a submarine they have there. Then we went on the Finnair skywheel, a giant sightseeing ferris wheel which has a sauna on one of the cars, of course. Finns put saunas everywhere. Then we went to the outdoor marketplace and had a lunch of Karelian pies and cinnamon rolls. Then to the Stockmann department store so we could get some Moomin gifts for the grandkids. Then we went back to the hotel for a nap and met again for dinner at a traditional Finnish restaurant for Karelian food. They served caviar which I don’t think is traditional, but it led me to ask, “Do I have caviar in my teeth?” This became a saying we used often to get a laugh, especially with a pretentious British accent.

22. Day one: Embarkation day. MSC didn’t say which port it was at, there are three. But we got on board quickly, since they have people boarding at many different ports on the same itinerary. Our room was ready quickly and our luggage arrived. They are not great with communicating things like the time and location of the safety drill and that we need to link our cards to a credit card at a kiosk. They are an Italian ship so the announcements are in five languages. It’s an older ship so there is no app but we chose it for the itinerary. The staff are great. Our main waiter is from Bali and our steward is from Honduras. We have a balcony with a partially obstructed view. We have an adjoining room with our friends John and Esther. Esther speaks Italian, Spanish, and English, while John speaks English and Dutch. I speak Finnish and English, and my husband only English. We had frog legs as an appetizer; it tastes like chicken wings with a bit of a fishy aftertaste, but not bad. Then we went to a show that was mostly flamenco dancing; very good. The sun sets at 11:30 p.m.

23. Day two: In Stockholm, Sweden. We went to the Abba museum, I’ll post a picture, and also the Vasa Ship museum. The show was called Italian love songs. We brought flags representing where we were born; Venezuala, Suriname, Jamaica, and Finland, as well as Canada. It was a great conversation piece as people tried to guess the flags. I’ll post a picture.

24. Day three: This was our first of four sea days; we started a tournament of cards; 500 rummy, Finnish rules. One word, jatko, means continuation, and when Esther would jatko, she’d say, “I jatko you!” which sounds like a threat. The show as ‘L’amore (opera, ballet, concert piano), which isn’t really my taste, even though I have caviar in my teeth. It was the White Night party, so most wore white and we went to a dance on the pool deck.

25. Day four: Kiel, Germany. Late morning, it’s Sunday so everything is closed; so we took a taxi to walk along the boardwalk and eat bratwurst. The show was called Viva Fantasia, which is a good-bye show for some who are leaving the next day. We browsed and bought some costume jewellery rings.

26. Day five: Second sea day; formal night.

27. Day six: Hate to sleep because even going into the fjords is something to see from the balcony. We arrived in Bergen, Norway, but Esther was sick and slept 24 hours because of the medication. My husband and I went on a hop-on-hop-off bus but most of the earphone jacks didn’t work; we should have brought our own and linked into the site. We bought our usual fridge magnets in each town and a few other small things. We went to a fish market but it was so expensive; 50 euro for a skewer of four shrimps, scallops, and pieces of salmon. We bought reindeer sausage to bring home. We shared an order of fish and chips, which were delicious. We didn’t go to a show since Esther was sick. There aren’t many food options and there are times when nothing is open, which is unlike most cruise ships. We did like the charcoal pizza in the buffet.

28. Day seven: Nordfjordeid, Norway. It means inner northern fjord. We walked ten minutes from the ship to the Sagastad Viking museum which had an actual replica of a Viking ship. I can’t imagine the bravery of those people to go out onto the open North Atlantic ocean with no cover. I’ll post a picture of my book among the props. Then we dipped our toes in the North Atlantic waters of the fjord, and I can honestly say that Lake Superior is much colder. Nap, then I fell in the public washroom before the excursion. Esther was with me. It has happened before. I hit my hip resulting in a nasty bruise, and I hit my head on the floor and on the doorstop which is a big pipe instead of a spring with a rubber stopper like we have in Canada. I didn’t report it, but probably should have. We had to tender over to the shore. The show that evening was called Rhythm Divine. More cards. Lots of fun.

29. Day eight: Olden, Norway. Each stop is more beautiful than the last. We took a ‘train’ tour bus in land which had amazing scenery. We bought some souvenirs and took silly pictures with trolls. The show in the evening was called Aziza; with a contortionist who turned his head 180 degrees as his finale. He was incredible! We had our dinner in the buffet instead and played cards in the back. The washrooms in our stateroom stopped working, until they discharged into the ocean once we were out in international waters.

30. Day nine: Stavanger, Norway. This is the stop where you can go to pulpit rock, but it’s got three strikes against it for me; a long, hard hike to get to it, heights, and an edge with no railing. Nope, nope, and nope. We bought some souvenirs. We did part one of an on-board excursion which was really interesting; today was the bridge and engine room. No phones allowed. We didn’t see a show tonight. John and Esther did the hop-on-hop-off and said they couldn’t see anything. Dinner at the buffet. The back of the ship was shaking so hard salt and pepper shakers were falling off the table and breaking.

Maren is three!

May Journaling

1.     Our travel buddies, John and Esther are taking us out for dinner for my birthday. They’re such good friends and so thoughtful.

2.     Hormone doctor appointment; housekeeper; and a cardiologist appointment with my mom. Busy day.

3.     Scrambling to finish my lesson for Thursday. Done. Whew! Just heard our return flight was cancelled and rebooked for when our ship arrives in port so we have to change it.

4.     Beginning Ephesians. There is only one lady out of eleven of us that has a hard time with election/predestination. Errands.

5.     Writing. Errands.

6.     Shopping. We bought new luggage and some clothes and shoes for our trip.

7.     Church and a VBS planning meeting.

8.     Chiro and massage and errands. We got our fence fixed. The one at the side of the house was wavy.

9.     Finally finished my lesson for Thursday. 21 hours of research and writing for Ephesians chapter one.

10. We bought luggage and are beginning to do something each day to prepare. We pre-ordered the drinks package and some excursions.

11. Teaching, then getting euro for our trip, then an eye appointment so I get new glasses before travel since mine have broken frames.

12. Finally finished Deuteronomy 32 for my podcast. It took two weeks because I was so busy and it is a long chapter. It’s also my sister’s 61st birthday today.

13. My husband helped my mother-in-law purchase a new dishwasher.

14. My mother-in-law is 78 today. I’ll post a picture. She looks amazing. Still works out every day. My husband went to help hook up her new dishwasher. Went to purchase a new dryer. Terrified of a fire after what happened with the bbq.

15. Writing for my class on Thursday; Ephesians 2.

16. We had to rebook our flights because one of them was cancelled. Same time frame generally but different airlines and layover locations. Pain clinic today.

17. Set our mail to be on hold while we’re gone. Arranging for my mom to go to London while we’re gone. Our new dryer arrived today. AC maintenance. Missed prayer meeting tonight; still working on my message for tomorrow.

18. My students are so gracious. We decided to cut the lesson in half today because it’s so full. I can breathe a bit.

19. Went out for fish and chips. Yikes, they were not cheap.

20. My mom has been weak and fatigued lately. I wonder if she’s getting anemic again.

21. Church. Our third grandchild is three today.

22. Victoria Day. There is a garden party today and we’re chipping for a bouncy castle.

23. Writing, and out for a walk with my husband. Not much stamina, it’s been a while.

24. Dentist today. Getting a requisition for bloodwork for my mom to check for anemia.

25. Bible study.

26. Women’s retreat this weekend at Elim Lodge. I’m driving.

27. Wow. The topic is Enjoy Your God. It was incredible.

28. It was a great weekend and it was nice to catch up with the speaker, Heather, whom I’ve known for over 30 years.

29. My mom’s bloodwork came back and her hgb was very low (67) normal is 140-160. So the doctor suggested going to the ER where her haematologist is. So after waiting 3-1/2 hours she got in, and they gave her three units of packed red blood cells (PRBC) overnight. I went home for supper and returned at 2 am thinking she’d be ready to go home. At that point she’d had two units and was waiting on the repeat CBC to see how much the transfusions had helped. At five a.m. it was only at 77. I learned later that on admission, her hgb was 53 so it did raise it as expected, (10 points per unit) but it was still low. So they offered her another unit since she was there and had an i.v. in. So I went home to sleep and she took a cab home at 2 p.m. when all was said and done. Her hgb went up to 88 and she is asymptomatic and has pink cheeks now. I wanted to take care of it before we went away on our cruise. I didn’t want to leave any issues for my cousin to deal with. Whether they’ll reinvestigate for a cause or not, I don’t know. They didn’t find anything when she was hospitalized a year and a half ago for anemia. No active bleeding. Although she has been taking Aleve, which can cause internal bleeding. Plus she’s on blood thinners. Anyway, crisis averted.

30. Housekeeper today. Slept all day.

31. Going to Hamilton to help out. The kids were given a full size trampoline with safety net. They have a good life.

Everest Base Camp

April Journaling

1.     Baking for tonight and tomorrow. I’m bringing blueberry pies and ice cream for the elders’ and wives’ dinner tonight. And I made mini chocolate cupcakes for coffee time tomorrow morning.

2.     Church. Then a VBS planning meeting. I’ll be doing snacks, but it starts a few days after we return from vacation. Hope I am not too wiped.

3.     Dropped off our taxes. Writing.

4.     Busy day. Botox appointment, nap, then downtown for dinner and our Genesis course.

5.     To H-town to help out.

6.     Lots of writing.

7.     Good Friday service.

8.     Our daughter arrived safely in Nepal for her climb to base camp of Mount Everest.

9.     Resurrection Sunday.

10. Sent off our taxes.

11. Pain clinic.

12. Chiro and massage. Did prayer meeting online tonight, not feeling well. There was an avalanche at Everest and three climbers were swept into a crevasse and still missing. So sad. Our daughter texted to say it was not where they were currently and they are not going that high either. Still a concern.

13. Bible study; Galatians chapter five on the fruit of the Spirit.

14. The grandkids and our daughter are coming for a night or two since her husband is going to PEI for a business trip. Discovered two giant raccoons living under the deck; probably have little ones too.

15. My husband took our grandson to church with him for the men’s meeting since his friends were there for piano lessons. Then he took the grandkids to the park. We sat outside and told jokes. It was a beautiful day. He bbq’d hamburgers for dinner and turned off the bbq as he usually does. We were eating in the dining room when he smelled rubber burning. The bbq which was on the deck against the house was on fire. I gave the kitchen fire extinguisher to him and he tried to put it out, but the extinguisher was small and of limited use, and he feared the tank might blow up. We closed the door to the house. Our daughter called 911 but had to wait a minute before they even answered. It seemed to take forever for them to come. Meanwhile we could hear the fire eating through the deck. The neighbours started to gather. Thankfully the kids didn’t see the actual fire but they were stressed. The girls started crying. Our grandson was happy to see the firetrucks. There were three. They extinguished the fire and checked the whole house for carbon monoxide and found some, so they used a strong fan to dissipate it. They gave the kids colouring books and said they couldn’t identify the actual cause of the fire. We contacted our insurance company and told them the fire department was concerned about the electrical outlet which had melted just above the bbq so they sent an electrician that evening to check it and it was only external, which was why it didn’t short out. When the adrenaline calmed down, the kids went home, and we thanked God for safety, and that there was no structural damage to the house itself or any smoke damage that we could tell. The propane didn’t explode. I’ll post pictures of the damage. They had to cut through the deck to make sure there were no hot spots. If those raccoons were smart, they got out of there fast, too.

16. Church. Lunch at a friends’ house. Still frazzled from yesterday’s fire.

17. Writing. Finished my lesson for Thursday.

18. Writing. Our social worker daughter will be going back to school for one year to get her Masters in Social Work. Then her employer offered her a position when she finishes.

19. Going to Hamilton to help out. My son-in-law is on a panel at my old alma mater, George Brown College.

20. Last chapter of Galatians for Bible study.

21. We purchased a replacement bbq today.

22. I finished my summary of Galatians for Thursday.

23. Church.

24. Grandparents’ Day at the school. I had to go solo.

25. Our daughter sent pictures of herself at Everest Base Camp. Now a few days in Kathmandu and then she will return home.

26. Writing.

27. The inquest report from my dad’s workplace accident arrived. Unfortunately it was half typed, half handwritten, and my 30 years of nursing helped me decipher the doctor’s handwriting. We got everything but one word so far. My lawyer daughter thought of it and has a friend in archives who helped us know where to look.

28. Got my hair highlighted for our trip to Europe. Our friends came over to book our excursions. Long day.

29. The family came over a day early. Our daughter returned safely yesterday from Nepal (Everest Base Camp). I’ll post a picture. We had lunch and a cake. The grandkids wanted to blow out the candle.

30. I’m 59. Safely through another year.
